THE ROBERT GOTHAM INTERVIEW, AUGUST 2022

Robert Gotham is a creative director and visual artist based out of Los Angeles that is praised in the Music, Fashion & Film industry for his gift with immersive 3d designing and experiental animation. We spoke to Rob about how he went from designing music covers as a hobby at the University of Michigan, to working full-time for Drake & OVO.

What is your name, age, where are you from?

My name is Robert Gotham, I’m 26 years old, and I currently reside in Los Angeles. I came from Michigan and before that Boston.

How would you describe your profession?

I’m a creative of many sorts. My specialty is 3d although i often branch out into experiential and graphic design. A lot of what I do now falls under the category of creative direction, although I generally don’t like that term.

Tell us about your background with visual art design and animation? How did you get into this?

I first got started in high school and continued throughout college. I was always really into music and film and sort of designed covers as a hobby during junior year of college. It was during that time that it sort of became a profession to me.
.

When did you realize that you could pursue art & technology as your career?

Probably during my senior year of college. I had been going back and forth a lot between Michigan and LA and realized I could probably do this full time. I’m blessed to have figured out my thing pretty early on in life.

What are some of your favorite album/song covers you’ve worked on?

Honestly my favorite cover I worked on was for this artist nothing nowhere and I really like a lot of newer stuff i’ve worked on for OVO.

What is the first bigger brand you worked with?

Brand? Probably Motorola or Nike.

When brands/artists approach you for video work, do most of them give you a format to follow or do they give you full artistic control?

My full time job is working for Drake so that’s a given but also a lot of creative agencies and independent art studios.

Tell us about one of the first experiences you had when you realized all of the time & work you were putting into your portfolio paid off?

Seeing my visuals at Astroworld for the first time live.

What is one of the most memorable brands or people you’ve worked with? Why?

Honestly just my friends. Major clients aren’t that memorable to me.

What does the future hold for Robert Gotham?

I really want to just leave the music scene and work in fashion / experiential design and film. The transition is pretty rough I’ve heard but a lot of people are doing it nowadays.
Thank you so much Rob,
